Laptops are (obviously) mobile, so in the few situations where having an anti-reflective [shiny] screen make it hard to view, one only has to move the screen around, or find a new location to fix the problem.

With desktop panels, and especially larger LCD TVs, those same situations (ie directly across from a window, or reflecting from a large light) can more easily cause problems, due to being more permanent. In these cases, the matte screen is actually more desirable, even though it can cause a very slight drop in contrast.

There has been at least one manufacturer of LCD TVs who created glossy panel LCDs - Olevia. They've since switched back to matte panels though, for the reasons listed above.

Try the LCD Monitor Repair site. It covers component technology related to consumer & industrial displays.

An all-in-one reference for electronics engineers.

That monitor is an LCD which stands for Liquid Crystal Display. TFT is a technology that nearly all LCD monitors today use. That LG monitor appears to use TFT technology from what I found on the web.

Usually you get eye strain because of the poor refresh rate, cheap monitors could start at 60Hz to 75Hz, professional monitors can user higher frequencies, for example 100Hz, 125Hz etc.

Best monitor performance is not based on just highest resolution because some monitors can reach 1920 x ... but you get only 70Hz or 75Hz.
Before buy a new one see the list of resolutions and refresh rates and point to a refresh rate not below 75Hz

Cheers
